What made you want to do an apprenticeship in the highways and transport sector?

I want to make a tangible impact on the development of transport infrastructure and contribute to the improvement of transportation systems. Joining BAM Nuttall as a Trainee Engineer within their Northern Region provided me with the platform to work on significant projects that not only enhanced the connectivity of the city but also played a role in environmental sustainability. Being involved in the delivery of key projects such as the £29 million Stourton Park & Ride scheme, the £4 million extension of Temple Green Park and Ride, and the £6 million Elland Road Park and Ride for Leeds City Council is rewarding, especially when driving past them or using them! Each project presented challenges and learning opportunities, allowing me to develop a diverse skill set. The sense of accomplishment knowing my assistance contributed to the development of transport links in Leeds is amazing. Furthermore, being part of initiatives aimed at reducing emissions is rewarding, particularly with the current climate crisis.

What would you say is the highlight your apprenticeship so far?

The highlight of my apprenticeship journey has been the recognition and awards I've received, underscoring not only my personal achievements but also being a role model for diversity in the highways and transport sector. Winning the CIHT Apprentice of the Year award is a milestone I cherish deeply, as it represents not only my dedication but the industry's acknowledgment of the value I bring. Being honoured with such a prestigious award has opened doors and opportunities for me, showcasing the impact of my contributions to the sector.
This acknowledgment not only boosts my confidence but also sends a powerful message about the potential for success, irrespective of gender or background. As a woman of colour in the highways and transport sector, the recognition I've received has allowed me to serve as a role model for others. It's a privilege to inspire others who may face similar challenges or barriers.

What advice would you give someone thinking about doing an apprenticeship in the highways and transport sector?

Embarking on an apprenticeship is a journey that offers opportunities for learning and professional growth. I would advise to stay up to date on projects, big or small, to help your understanding on the sector. It will also help you during interview process, illustrating your interest in the sector. If you aren’t on an apprenticeship, get some experience! I have said this numerous times but being in the workplace is where you will absorb the most information. If there are any networking events, don't be shy to attend.  Building a strong professional network can provide mentorship, open doors to opportunities, and offer insights into the sector. We can all learn from each other, and who knows, you may help someone else!

What steps are you looking forward to taking in your career next?

I aspire to broaden my professional horizons by taking on a diverse range of projects and roles. I would also love to work abroad; it will not only expose me to different cultural perspectives but also deepen my understanding of global challenges.  On a personal level, I want to work on my self-confidence. Strengthening my confidence will help me take on leadership roles and navigate on complex projects.

Being treated equally alongside other influential figures within the institute makes me feel like I can make a difference and make improvements. Why are apprenticeships so crucial to the sector?

The nature of the industry demands hands-on experience. Apprenticeships allow you to witness projects unfold and translating theoretical knowledge into practical skills. Even if you are office based such as designing or planning, it is still beneficial to see drawings come to life and obstacles that you may not be able to see on the drawing. Moreover, soft skills, like effective communication and managing materials, are best learned through experience. Apprenticeships offer a dynamic learning environment where you can actively engage in tasks and real-world challenges that go beyond what can be learned in a lecture hall. I also feel you mature quicker doing an apprenticeship, particularly working with experienced people, and using your time wisely. Apprentices learn to navigate the professional world, understand workplace dynamics, and adapt to challenges.

What do you think leaders need to be thinking about or doing today that perhaps wasn’t part of the equation for leaders five or ten years ago?

It is crucial for leaders to prioritise Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion in ways that might not have been as emphasised five or ten years ago. Leaders should proactively develop leadership styles that foster a sense of belonging and appreciate diverse viewpoints. This entails recognising the diverse experiences of individuals from various backgrounds and nurturing a culture where everyone is heard and respected. We should be ready to engage in open conversations about aspects such as race, gender, and other dimensions of diversity.
