Transport for West Midlands

Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) is the transport authority within the West Midlands and the transport arm of West Midlands Combined Authority.  TfWM is responsible for promoting and developing public transport as well as ensuring connectivity for residents in the region to keep people moving.

A key aspect under TfWM’s remit is road safety in the West Midlands, managing the Key Route Network, which includes 23 of the region’s busiest routes.  TfWM also oversees the Regional Transport Coordination Centre, a 24/7 hub that uses live feeds and CCTV to monitor the transport network and manage disruptions.  This centre brings together TfWM, transport operators, emergency services and local authorities.  It has been instrumental in keeping the region moving during major events, such as the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

TfWM does not directly operate any of the trains or buses, which serve the region, but we work on these services with bus and train operators under partnerships such as the West Midlands Rail Executive and Bus Alliance.  We also promote and develop the Midland Metro tram system, which TfWM owns but does not operate.

Products such as Swift is delivered by TfWM and is the UK’s most-used smart ticketing system outside London.  TfWM works with operators to provide integrated ticketing solutions for the region.  TfWM is committed to keeping the West Midlands moving efficiently and sustainably.
