Course structure

Module 1

Welcome to our CIHT Learn course on Green and Blue Infrastructure (GBI)!

At CIHT we believe the transport sector must actively embrace GBI to achieve our Net Zero and biodiversity targets. GBI holds a plethora of opportunities and benefits for highways, roads, and streets, such as cost savings, climate resilience, and the promotion of healthy communities.

Module 2

In this module, we will look at some of the most well-known and recent laws and policies that dictate how and why you should consider implementing GBI within your projects.

The purpose of this module is to ensure you can:

  • Describe what the 25-Year Environment Plan is and what this means for the highways and transportation sector.
  • Understand Natural England’s Green Infrastructure Framework and Building with Nature’s Standards Framework so you can implement high-quality GBI.
  • Understand the legal requirements surrounding Biodiversity Net Gain and Local Nature Recovery Plans.

Module 3

In this module, we will delve into why GBI features are so beneficial to society and the planet.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Explain how GBI features provide environmental benefits such as cooling, drought and flood resilience, biodiversity and cleaner air/water.
  • Describe why GBI is good for mental well-being and promoting active travel.
  • Understand the economic benefits of GBI in terms of saving money and increasing revenue.
  • Welcome to the final module in the introduction to green and blue infrastructure.

Module 4

  • It's quiz time, let's see what you have remembered and importantly understood.
  • All the questions in the quiz can be found in the previous 3 modules, so you may want to dip back in and out of some as a reminder.
