After an enforced break due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the annual CIHT Northern Ireland Study Tour is returning and will be to Glasgow.
Glasgow is a very walkable city, being compact and easy to get around and there has been significant investment in transport, and particularly active travel, in recent years meaning there is plenty to see and do.
Travel will be via ferry and coach, departing Belfast on the morning of Wednesday 15th May, arriving in Glasgow early-afternoon.
Further information can be found on the event flyer.
After lunch we plan to have a tour of Glasgow Central Station, where we will be given a behind the scenes look at the station, walking in subterranean passageways beneath Glasgow’s streets and visiting railway vaults that drove Glasgow’s industrial expansion. We will also hear tales of the famous and infamous who have travelled the tracks and stood on the platforms of Glasgow Central Station.
The first day will be concluded with a meal in the city centre.
On Day 2 we plan to start with a site visit to the Govan to Partick Bridge, a new fabricated steel cable stayed opening swing bridge that is currently under construction, with Farrans as main contractor.
Following lunch, we will receive presentations from Glasgow City Council firstly on the Glasgow Avenues project, an ambitious plan aimed at improving connections between the city centre and communities on the edge of the centre, and secondly on their Ultra-Smart Cycle System, which uses award-winning technology to help a local Bike Bus ensure a large group of children can safely cross a very busy junction on their route to school. After returning to the hotel, we will meet again for an evening meal in the city centre.
Friday morning will be free time, allowing some time to explore Glasgow at your leisure, departing around noon to return by coach to Cairnryan and on to Belfast, arriving back in Belfast on Friday evening.
