CIHT East Midlands are delighted to offer this webinar on the award winning asphalt ravelling mitigation presented by Mariam Abedraba Abdalla, PhD research student at University of Nottingham & Director of Khadra Management.
Ravelling causes friction loss and unevenness on asphalt surfaces if left untreated. Ravelled roads usually resurface at a high economic, social, and environmental cost. Polymer-modified binders delay ravelling; however, they may be costly and are not appropriate for all locations. This talk will discuss a new alternative to replace polymer in asphalt by the addition of collapsible porous particles (cellular materials). Cellular materials i.e. wood, foam, etc.. are characterised by a porous structure comprised of closed or open cells that deforms under loading absorbing the force energy. When introduced in asphalt forming part of the aggregate skeleton it mitigates the aggregate dislodgment.
Anyone with an interest in materials and pavement engineering, pothole mitigation, and highways innovations.
Mariam Abedraba Abdalla - PhD Student, University of Nottingham & Director of Khadra Management As a final-year pavement engineering PhD student, Mariam has successfully bridged between academia and industry by innovating a technology and delivered a scalable solution beyond the level of laboratory experimentation. This technology has been used to construct two sections of self-healing asphalt: one in a quarry in 2021 and another on the M26 motorway in 2023, providing a unique opportunity to gain long-term performance insights and address the current understanding gap regarding the real-world applicability and performance of this technology. Additionally, she runs a construction management consultancy specializing in high-end construction renovations and building refurbishments. |
