Speakers

Glenn Lyons, CIHT President is the Mott MacDonald Professor of Future Mobility at UWE Bristol. The appointment bridges between academia and practice and Glenn is dividing his time between the university and Mott MacDonald (on secondment). At a time of significance for the transport sector, the position aims to co-develop and extend transport expertise in relation to understanding and responding to a changing and uncertain mobility landscape, which is shaped by technological possibilities and societal needs and preferences.

Mark Corbin Director of Network Resilience Transport for West Midlands has over 25 years’ experience working in the Automotive and Highways sectors.  He is the Director of Network Resilience at Transport for West Midlands (TfWM), and chair of the Adept National Traffic Managers Forum. He leads a team within TfWM collaborating and working with multiple organisations including the seven local authorities in the West Midlands, Department for Transport, National Highways, HS2, Network Rail and others keeping residents, businesses and visitors informed of transport disruption helping them to plan journeys and keep moving as well.  He is recognised nationally by his colleagues as an innovator and a genuine collaborator, seeking to make things happen with a holistic approach.

Phil Edwards Assistant Director for Transport and Connectivity at Birmingham City Council, with a wide portfolio of responsibility covering Infrastructure Delivery, Project Delivery, Traffic Management, Transport Planning, Behaviour Change and a range of back office planning and highways functions. Phil is particularly passionate about the growth of Birmingham and has played major roles in delivering the New Street Gateway project, releasing green belt as part of the Birmingham Development Plan, developing the HS2 Connectivity Package and securing devolved funding for the West Midlands Combined Authority, and also securing a £350m growth deal for the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership. He also led the Council’s transportation work to support delivery of the 2022 Commonwealth Games, and is leading on the Clean Air Zone working across a number of Government departments

Claire Stocks Senior Strategy Officer (Active Travel), Greater Manchester Combined Authority
Claire works in the team supporting the Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, Transport Commissioners Vernon Everitt and Active Travel Commissioner Dame Sarah Storey, on the delivery of the Bee Network - the region’s affordable, integrated public transport system which is in development and when finished will provide seamless journeys across bus, tram and train - and with walking wheeling and cycling the glue linking it all together.
Claire has had a less usual route to working in transport policy - having worked as BBC journalist and executive, started a cargo bike company and launched a grassroots advocacy organisation.
Claire will share her reflections on, & tips from, her journey through different career phases - and how varied skillsets gained, might be an asset dealing with today’s complex transport challenges.

Don't just take our word for it.....

I had a great day at the Emerging Professionals Conference. All the speakers gave interesting talks on topics that differed to what I do on a day to day basis. I also had the chance to meet other emerging professionals and learn what their job involves. It was interesting to see that even though we all work in the same industry, the scope of what we all do at work is so varied.

— Jemima Odom

The Emerging Professionals Conference is an excellent opportunity to network and collaborate with colleagues at similar stages in their careers, to discuss current and future trends within the industry. Focusing on an audience of emerging professionals allows everyone, regardless of experience, to feel confident participating and gain real value from the speakers and breakout sessions. I would recommend this event to anyone working within the industry who is eager to attend a well run, informative and engaging conference within Highways.

— Sam Lovett
