Buses are crucial for supporting how people travel and are key to decarbonising the transport network. This webinar will provide exclusive insight into a world class new Transport for London project, run in collaboration with University College London, on thermal comfort on buses and wider sustainability and the presentation 'from green & cream to Green'.
You will hear presentations from an incredible panel of speakers including world-renowned thought leaders David Astill and Nick Tyler.
The webinar will be hosted on a virtual event platform and will see a set of presentations from three experts within the bus industry. Apart from listening to fascinating presentations, you will find out about the new DfT/CIHT Bus Centre of Excellence initiative that brings together knowledge and expertise from across the sector to improve the delivery of bus services.
There will be a Q&A session towards the end of the webinar where the audience can ask the speakers their questions.

Professor Nick Tyler CBE FREng is the Chadwick Professor of Civil Engineering at UCL and the Director of the UCL Centre for Transport Studies. Nick conducts research into the application of engineering design to the urban environment, including the interactions with people and policy.
Recent research projects have included contributions to the design of the Thameslink services and trains, access for disabled people to the London Underground Victoria London, Thermal comfort on London Buses, redesign of buses for the Covid pandemic, creating Acoustic Vehicle Alert Systems for e-scooters, New Tube for London, Evaluation of digital signage for London Buses, and the investigation of urban environments for autistic people. Nick is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation, and the Royal Society of Arts, was appointed CBE in 2011, and awarded the CIHT Institution Award in 2022.

David has recently celebrated 40 years working in the bus industry. His career has taken him to Oxford, London, West Midlands, Staffordshire, Cheshire, Merseyside and Greater Manchester. He returned to his home city of Nottingham fifteen years ago to take on the Commercial & Operations brief with Nottingham City Transport and took over as Managing Director two years ago.
His talk ‘from green & cream to Green’ will explain how the former operator of one of the largest provincial trolleybus fleets in the country has experimented with alternative fuels and is now returning to electric traction.
Head of the Bus Centre of Excellence, CIHT
James Ford is Head of the Bus Centre of Excellence. He has more than twenty years’ experience in policy and public affairs roles for organisations such as the London Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Construction Industry Training Board and Historic Houses as well as working for several communications consultancies providing senior counsel to clients in the transport and aviation, financial services and built environment sectors. Between 2010 and 2012 he was an adviser to Mayor of London Boris Johnson, working on transport, environment, and technology policy.
