 About the speakers

Nick Tyler

Director of the UCL Centre for Transport Studies and Chadwick Professor of Civil Engineering

Nick Tyler is a Fellow of CIHT and was appointed a CBE in the New Year's Honours 2011 for services to technology. Nick investigates the ways in which people interact with their immediate environments. He set up the Accessibility Research Group within the Centre for Transport Studies, with a team of researchers investigating many aspects of accessibility and public transport. The group has a total research portfolio of more than £40million for projects directed towards making the world more sympathetic to people's needs and creating a sustainable future for both people and planet. including the PAMELA pedestrian environment laboratory, which is being used to develop models for accessible pedestrian infrastructure, and which is being enhanced as part of the Government's UKCRIC programme, to create a new larger facility called PEARL. His work is highly transdisciplinary, and his team includes and works with, apart from civil and mechanical engineers, psychologists, architects, musicians, philosophers, neuroscientists, artists, urban designers, planners, economists, ophthalmologists, audiologists and orthopaedics. He is a co-founder of the UCL Universal Composition Laboratory (UCL2), which undertakes multisensorial spatiotemporal design. In 2024, Nick acted as project Chair on the CIHT report Creating a public realm for all.

Jen Sweeney

Corporate Engagement Manager, Thomas Pocklington Trust

Jen is the Corporate Engagement Manager at Thomas Pocklington Trust (TPT), a charity dedicated to supporting blind and partially sighted people to live the lives they choose. Jen’s work focuses on driving accessibility improvements in products and services, with a particular emphasis on accessible transport, accessible health and the accessible built environment. With a background in sales and marketing in the corporate sector, Jen transitioned to the nonprofit sector 11 years ago to use those skills in supporting people with disabilities. Over the past decade, Jen has worked across pan-disability charities, fostering collaboration with organisations to implement meaningful change. Since joining TPT two and a half years ago, Jen has led corporate engagement efforts and spearheaded national initiatives, including: ‘Vision Impairment Awareness’ resources for UK Bus Driver training, endorsed by the Confederation of Passenger Transport and aligned with Driver CPC training by the Driver Vehicle Standards Agency. ‘Designing Highways and Transportation for Blind and Partially Sighted People’ e-learning, developed in collaboration with Carrie Playford at CIHT. A key part of Jen’s work is ensuring that lived experience is central to accessibility solutions. I take great pride in leading colleagues and Sight Loss Council volunteers to co-develop impactful resources that reflect real-world challenges and solutions. Jen is passionate about collaborating with organisations to create more inclusive environments. If you’re looking to enhance accessibility in your products, services, or infrastructure, Jen would love to connect with you!

Further Information

CIHT Learn courses are designed to train frontline employees and managers in the skills critical for your business.  We work with recognised experts within the sector using their practical experiences and insights gained from real-world experience. We distill this knowledge into bite size standardised online courses ensuring you and your team get consistent expert led training at your convenience.  Perfect to upskill your team and fill knowledge gaps effectively, efficiently and economically. CIHT Learn provides a number of courses around designing and building inclusive  places and Infrastructure.

Designing highways and transportation for blind and partially sighted people: this has been developed with Thomas Pocklington Trust and provides a comprehensive understanding of vision impairment, its impact, and relevant disability legislation.  We highlight inclusive transport solutions, the role of lived experience in co-design, and strategies to integrate accessibility into everyday planning, ensuring transport systems become truly inclusive.

Understanding Disability: All our towns and cities are littered with examples of thoughtless planning and provision which create barriers to the independent mobility of many disabled and older people. The purpose of this course is to make sure that future generations of professionals do not repeat those mistakes and that understanding disability and practicing inclusive design is engrained as an intuitive part of everyday thinking and planning.

Designing highways and transportation for people with dementia: This course considers the possible impacts of the current design of transport services and environments on people with dementia, some ideas for improvement and the role that they can play in helping transport professionals design more inclusive journeys for everyone. It will challenge common assumptions, offer valuable insight, and provide ideas that support more inclusive journeys for everyone.
