The theme for 2023 will focus on the Net Zero Agenda and Climate Change and how this impacts, not only our profession in Highways and Transportation but also many of our Development Partners who we work alongside within the Built Environment and Construction Industry.
CIHT North East & Cumbria are pleased to be bringing the ‘CIHT Future Transport 2023: Planning for Net Zero Conference' event to the Hilton, Gateshead on Thursday 2 February 2023.
#FTCE2023 will be the largest conference and exhibition of its type in the North East. The theme for 2023 will focus on the Net Zero Agenda and Climate Change and how this impacts, not only our profession in Highways and Transportation but also many of our Development Partners who we work alongside within the Built Environment and Construction Industry.
The programme will include keynote speakers that work within the Construction and Built Environment sector including: Architects, Clients Development Surveyors, Joint Partnerships, Local Authorities, Non-Governmental Organisations, Planners, and Private Sector Consultancies.

Alongside the conference programme, an exhibition will be held where over twenty companies will be on hand to discuss their products and research. Full-day access to the conference and exhibition, along with lunch and refreshments, are included within the ticket price.

Train strike update
There are planned rail strikes due to take place on Wednesday 1st and Friday 3rd of February which could impact your ability to travel to and from this year’s Future Transport Conference. CIHT is therefore suggesting that you start to consider what your travel plans will look like if the strike does go ahead as planned. As there is no strike planned on 2nd February, you should still be able to travel to the conference by train.
Alternative forms of transport – Bicycle or walking (if local), bus, coach, etc or lift share – Consider offering or requesting a lift with colleagues, friends, or other CIHT Members / conference attendees in and around your local area.

Conference Guide: The guide will be used as pre-event publicity and will also be given to visitors on the day of the exhibition. After booking, you will be sent details of how to submit information or finished artwork for your standard advertisement.
Conference Set Up: The event will be open from 8.00am to 6.00pm. It is advised that all presenters make themselves known to the organising team upon arrival, and that they are present in the conference area at least 30-minutes prior to their allocated time.
Disclaimer for Loss or Damage and Indemnity: The CIHT will not be responsible for death or personal injury to the exhibitor, presenter or delegate, or any of their agents, contractors, sub-contractors, servants, employees or guests. The CIHT will not be responsible for any loss or damage occurring to any exhibit or any property of the attendees, howsoever caused. You are therefore advised to take out appropriate insurance.
Electrical Supply: Access to power sockets will be made available to exhibitors. You will be asked to supply a list of any electrical equipment that you will be using as part of your exhibition display, to ensure that power sockets are not overloaded. It is recommended that you bring your own extension cable if using electrical equipment. If you do not require electrical connection, please note this on the booking form so that your display can be appropriately located within the exhibition.
Exhibition Breakdown: The dismantling of exhibition displays before the official close at 6.00pm is strictly prohibited. All exhibitions must be removed from the venue no later than 9.00pm.
Exhibition Set Up: Set up for exhibitors must be complete no later than 8.00am on the day of the exhibition. Access to the venue will be available from 6.00am on the morning of the exhibition. Access will also be possible from 5pm the day before the event, and before 6am on the day, but is strictly by prior arrangement with the venue only.
Exhibition Space Allocation: All exhibition space will be allocated at the discretion of the organisers; however, every effort will be made to ensure that there is a good mix of exhibitors and that the arrangement is attractive to visitors. The decision of the organisers is final.
Exhibition Space: Each individual 3m (w) x 2m (d) exhibition space package consists of one table, approximately 1.8m x 0.6m, with a cloth, two chairs and an A5 advertisement in the conference guide. You may also use your own free-standing display stand(s) within the exhibition space allocated to you. Access to the interior of the venue is level and by way of 2.1m wide x 3m high doors. Please ensure your exhibition is smaller than these dimensions (see Outdoor Exhibition Space, below).
Exhibitor Badges: You will be asked to provide, in advance of the event, the names of all company personnel who will be attending. On arrival at the exhibition, please report to the registration desk where you will be given your badges and your copy of the conference guide. The badges act as proof of your eligibility to enter the exhibition and conference, so please ensure they are worn at all times.
Outdoor Exhibition Space: We are pleased to confirm that outdoor space is available, should you wish to offer ‘live’ demonstrations of your product and / or cannot fit within the venue. This space is directly in front of the venue, on their private forecourt, and will be accessible directly from within the main exhibition. If you require use of this space, please let us know when you book.
Refreshments: Limited free refreshments, including tea, coffee and lunch, will be available for both exhibitors and visitors. Additional refreshments can be purchased from the venue on the day. The use of kettles, coffee machines or microwave ovens as part of any exhibition display is prohibited.
Neil Johnstone – CIHT President
Neil has over 40 years of experience having worked in contracting, local government and consultancy for Balfour Beatty, Lothian Region, Halcrow, Systra and CONSULT-NJ Ltd. He chaired CIHT’s Scottish Policy Forum and became a trustee in 2018 as well as chairing the Appian Board and Learned Society/Technical Strategy Board. His career included design of Edinburgh City Bypass, road maintenance, traffic management and transport planning. Neil was an expert witness at the Edinburgh Congestion Charge Inquiry and carried out feasibility studies and appraisal of various modes including rail, road, busways, harbours and ferries.
