The Challenge of Social Considerations 

Transport planners often face criticism for prioritising low-carbon travel options without adequate consideration of their feasibility and take-up within communities. Merely placing a low-carbon option in the mix does not guarantee its adoption. Critically, there has been a historical neglect of social issues in transport planning and delivery, with a predominant focus on economic efficiency rather than justice and fairness.

In this workshop we will discuss the following questions: 

• What are the current barriers that stop transport professionals from considering issues of fairness, justice and accessibility from the outset of a low carbon project?
• Is it a lack of the right skills or measuring tools? Or is there a need for a wider cultural shift within the profession?
