The CIHT Young Professionals Conference took place at thestudio in Leeds on Thursday 15 November 2018. This conference is endorsed for CPD and featured a range of influential speakers, including presentations from Ed Parsons (Google) and Tom Younger (Uber). Exploring the people, projects and technologies which will lead us into the future of transportation.
Dr Helen Bailey
Managing Director, The Driven Company Associates Limited
Helen graduated from The University of Leeds in 2005 with a First Class honours in Architectural Engineering. From there she went on to work in Aggregate Industries asphalt research and development department, completing a number of projects and her PhD.

Helen later worked in the field of asphalt recycling and tar remediation before joining TRL in 2012. During her time at TRL Helen contributed to an international team and undertook work across Europe, Middle East and Africa. Since leaving TRL in 2015, Helen has set up her own consultancy, Driven, which allows her to remain an active part of the industry she loves, and is also programme leader for all asphalt programmes within the Centre for Mineral Products at the University of Derby, UK. Helen is a Chartered Engineer with the CIHT (Chartered Institute of Highways and Transportation) and IAT (Institute of Asphalt Technology).
Tom Younger
Cities Lead for the North of England, Uber
Tom initially joined Uber to launch the service in Liverpool, before becoming an operational lead for the national launch and expansion team. Tom now operates as Uber's City Lead across the North of England, as well as having responsibility for licensing support and strategic partnerships across the UK.

Glenn Lyons
Glenn Lyons, Mott MacDonald Professor of Future Mobility, UWE Bristol
Glenn is the Mott MacDonald Professor of Future Mobility at UWE Bristol where he was previously Associate Dean for Research and Enterprise in the Faculty of Environment and Technology and the founding Director of the Centre for Transport & Society.
Glenn is the Mott MacDonald Professor of Future Mobility at UWE Bristol where he was previously Associate Dean for Research and Enterprise in the Faculty of Environment and Technology and the founding Director of the Centre for Transport & Society.
He is seconded for half his time to Mott MacDonald from UWE Bristol, creating a bridge between academia and practice. Throughout his research career of over 25 years he has focused upon the role of new technologies in supporting and influencing travel behaviour both directly and through shaping lifestyles and social practices.
A former secondee to the UK Department for Transport and more recently to the New Zealand Ministry of Transport, Glenn has led major studies into traveller information systems, teleworking, virtual mobility, travel time use, user innovation, road pricing, public and business attitudes to transport and future mobility. He is now actively engaged in examining the future prospects for technological innovations including Connected Autonomous Vehicles and Mobility as a Service.
He has been involved in a number of strategic futures initiatives and recent engagements have included helping transport authorities address future uncertainty in their planning, policymaking and investment; and examining the need for transport planning practice to evolve. Glenn is a Trustee of the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation and of the Rees Jeffreys Road Fund. He is also a member of the UK Department for Transport’s Joint Analysis Development Panel.
Nicola Blaney
CIHT Young Professional of the Year 2018
Nicola is a Chartered Engineer. Since graduating in 2008, Nicola has undertaken a number of secondments to other Jacobs offices, Transport Scotland, Glasgow City Council and Glasgow 2014 Ltd. Nicola is enthusiastic with good communication skills and a positive attitude that inspires confidence in others.

She has a broad range of experience, including multi – disciplinary projects and working with contractors.
She believes her success in these projects is a result of her adaptability, appreciation for issues/ risks in the wider context and her determination to deliver optimum solutions.
Nicola has contributed to Transport Design Guidance, research projects and written strategy documents aimed at allowing clients to efficiently procure projects with a clear scope. She is logical and able to provide innovative solutions with feasibility at the forefront of her mind. Nicola was elected to the branch committee in 2014 and actively contributes to the training of our members. Nicola sits on Strathclyde University’s Civil & Environmental Engineering Industry Advisory Board.
Ed Parsons
Geospatial Technologist, Google
Ed Parsons is the Geospatial Technologist of Google, with responsibility for evangelising Google’s mission to organise the world’s information using geography. In this role he maintains links with Governments, Universities, Research and Standards Organisations which are involved in the development of Geospatial Technology.

He is a member of the the Board of Directors of the Open Geospatial Consortium and was co-chair of the W3C/OGC Spatial Data on the Web Working Group.
He is a Visiting Professor at University College London and an Executive Fellow at the University of Aberdeen Business School.
Ed is based in Google’s London office, and anywhere else he can plug in his laptop.
Ed was the first Chief Technology Officer in the 200-year-old history of Ordnance Survey, and was instrumental in moving the focus of the organisation from mapping to Geographical Information. He came to the Ordnance Survey from Autodesk, where he was EMEA Applications Manager for the Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Division.
He earned a Masters degree in Applied Remote Sensing from Cranfield Institute of Technology, holds a Honorary Doctorate in Science from Kingston University, London. and is a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, and a professional member of the British Computer Society.
David Ogden

David is a Fellow of the CIHT with a strong interest in introducing new ways of delivering highways services across the UK.

As a Business Director at Amey, he is responsible for the delivery of Amey’s highways business across the south of the UK and managing senior client relationships. On the Highways Executive Team, David is also the Business Development and Strategy lead for the Highways business unit focused on Amey’s strategic growth pipeline across the UK.
David gained a wide variety of experience before joining Amey, applying his knowledge of other industries to the Highways business unit. Starting his career in commercial disciplines before moving into operational and general management, he has worked across the construction, utilities and highways sectors. David’s collaborative approach means he often leads cross-sector projects at Amey, including being the Highways lead on Amey’s Smart Mobility group. Working with colleagues across Amey, Ferrovial and industry partners, the Smart Mobility group is focused on implementing innovative and disruptive technologies, and exploring how future mobility choices will affect our transport infrastructure now and in the future.
Richard Ward-Jones

and an interest in innovative and disruptive technologies, Richard chairs Amey’s Smart Mobility working group and is closely involved in several smart mobility schemes. Richard also sits on the CIHT West Midlands Committee and is a Director of Appian Trading (a CIHT subsidiary).

Following university and a position as Business Development Manager for Cranfield University, Adrian Hull has risen within Highways England over the last 12 years.

In a career that’s included managing multi-million pound projects; presenting to the European Commission and making numerous TV appearances, Adrian is now leading a major change programme to transform the way Highways England manages its assets. He is also a Fellow of the CIHT and Chair of the West Midlands region.
Mel Clarke
Customer Service Director, Highways England
Mel’s early career as a manager working for the Tribunal Service paved the way for a new career in roads, starting as an Operations Manager with Highways England.

Her career progressed within traffic operations, stepping up to act as Executive Director for customer operations and leading Highways England’s 365 day 24/7 national traffic operation. As well as leading customer operations, Mel also sponsored the continued professional development of the customer experience group, who delivered the company’s published Customer Service Strategy. On completing her part in leading the re-organisation, she took up her current role as Customer Service Director in Highways England.

Previously having worked as a contractor and also a distributor of Fosroc and other products. During my time I have offered support and training on the full Fosroc solution in the Middle East and Europe.

Emily See
Senior Consultant, Yotta
Emily has been working in the highways sector for the last five years since graduating from Brighton University with a BSc Environmental Science and an MSc in Highways Engineering Management.

Emily was part of the team that helped establish a new asset management function in East Sussex Highways and assisted them in achieving a Band 2 Incentive Fund status before joining Yotta in 2016.
As Senior Infrastructure Asset Management Consultant Emily has delivered consultancy services across the UK, South America and Australia, including asset management activities and innovation bids.

He studied Geography at university and has a keen interest in infrastructure and the environment. Stephen is developing his asset management and consultancy skills through the graduate programme while engaging with innovation bids and clients.

David Poole
Procurement & Supply Chain Director, HS2 Ltd
David Poole joined HS2 in March 2018 as Procurement & Supply Chain Director. He leads on Procurement and Supply Chain Management across the HS2 portfolio with specific focus on the commercial and procurement strategies that support upcoming major contract awards.

David joined HS2 after over 9 years of public procurement experience with Highways England where he was Executive Director, Commercial and Procurement. In this role David was part of the Executive team that completed the Highways Agency corporate transition to a Government owned company, Highways England.
David has extensive experience in supply chain management, procurement, purchasing and programme management having previously worked in a number of private sector businesses across aerospace, automotive and FMCG packaging, including as Supply Chain Director for GE Aviation System and Flight Control Systems.

Clare Linton joined the Urban Transport Group in May 2016, to conduct research across a range of transport policy areas including smart futures, integrated transport, public health, social inclusion, sustainability and data in transport.

Prior to this Clare completed a PhD in Low Carbon Technologies at the University of Leeds in 2016. Her PhD research explored the potential to reduce emissions from urban transport through more effective use of capacity. Clare has also worked in the Climate Change, Energy and Transport team at the Institute for Public Policy Research, researching public transport solutions. Clare holds a BA in Geography and an MSc in Climate Change and Policy, both from the University of Sussex.

Tina joined Balfour Beatty in 2015 after completing studies at Imperial College London, and have since had the opportunity to work on a range of exciting projects.

Earlier this year, Tina was part of a team that travelled to Rwanda to build a footbridge for a community of 5000 in partnership with the charity Bridges to Prosperity. After two years in piling, RC frame and cladding on a site secondment at the 54-storey Madison Tower in Canary Wharf, Tina is now returning to her role as a Temporary Works Engineer in the design office.

The format of this stream of the conference has been designed to support the sharing of innovative solutions in a fast paced fashion!
Space will be provided for Young Professionals and Lightning Presenters to discuss the concepts informally throughout the day.
