CIHT is pleased to present our latest policy report, Creating a Public Realm for All, which will be published on Tuesday 9 July.
Representatives from our Partner organisations and CIHT Technical Champions have formed three advisory groups for 2024. Each group is asked to develop and deliver a technical report that will positively influence the sector and support the changes the sector needs to take, to progress and develop. This event is to launch the first of the three reports.
Creating a Public Realm for All addresses the issues of how an inaccessible public realm can all too easily restrict people rather than inconvenience them, subsequently excluding them from public spaces and the activities and rights these spaces are supposed to provide.
Aimed at transport professionals, the report highlights the challenges that disabled people (with physical, sensory, cognitive, or intellectual impairments or differences, which may be readily apparent or non-visible), all face when using the public realm. It looks at the conflicts and challenges involved in achieving inclusive design of the public realm.
The report encourages co-cultivation (i.e. continuous, meaningful, engagement and representation from design through construction, operation and monitoring to re-evaluation) rather than just consultation on a public realm scheme so there is a shared understanding from both the user and the designer perspective, of the issues faced.
By attending this event, delegates will learn about:
