There’s a common misconception that cars are most efficient at around 50mph. This has historically driven a lot of road design, but it is in fact very, very wrong. In this talk we present the testing and modelling that shows that in urban environments most vehicles have the lowest CO2, fuel consumption and NOx emissions at a 15-20mph top speed. We also show the effects of peak speeds on average journey times in traffic.
We also show simulations and dashcam footage showing the effect of vehicle speed on pedestrian accidents.
We then discuss how lower speeds can be enabling for alternative lower carbon forms of transport.
Mainly Transport & Urban planners - the focus is mainly on urban roads, but everyone is welcome.
Dr Sam Bailey - Director of Future Transport & CEO, Skyrad Dr Samuel Bailey is the Director of Future Transport and the CEO of Engineering Consultants Skyrad. He worked as a vehicle emissions specialist for several automotive manufacturers before starting Skyrad. Skyrad provides inventive solutions to problems, including that of urban transport. He is also the creator of the Yo-go buggy sharing scheme.
