In February 2024, elected members at the City of Edinburgh Council agreed to a ‘Future Streets’ framework which presented a masterplan for removing intrusive traffic from Edinburgh city centre, and significant reallocation proposals for the Capital’s key corridors, high streets and town centres.
The framework will help unlock space for place and sustainable modes and contribute towards the Council’s ambitious 2030 transport goals for net zero and reducing car kilometres driven by 30%.
The framework also provides an interactive, public-facing mapping platform to improve engagement and accountability relating to future street space re-allocation– thought to be the only one of its kind in the UK.
George King, senior project manager at the City of Edinburgh Council, will describe how and why the framework was developed, summarising how it’s helping the shift to more integrated planning, ‘place-based’ approaches and helping to reduce stakeholder conflict.
He reflects on the experiences of Edinburgh through the process and offers lessons learned for cities seeking methods to accelerate street-space re-allocation projects.

This event is aimed at Transport Planners at all levels across public and private sector.
