Delivered by the Society of Road Safety Auditors (SoRSA) and hosted by the Kingdom of Fife Group of Advanced Motorists, this in-person talk will explore Smart Motorways.
This is a presentation by Kate Carpenter of Jacobs who has been involved in the Smart Motorway Programme since 2009.
Kate will be presenting the findings of the research on the operation and safety of Smart Motorways which also looks at driver behaviours and how in car technology has created its own issues. There will also be opportunity to ask questions and take part in discussion.
This event is open to all, however, it will be of particular interest to road users, traffic, highways and road safety engineers.

Kate has been involved in development of Smart Motorways in England and Scotland since 2009 and has been involved in safety governance of the most recent work to introduce Stopped Vehicle Detection and add more Emergency Areas (laybys for emergency stops) to existing schemes following Transport Select Committee Inquiry and subsequent National Highways commitments.
Kate will summarise the different forms of Smart Motorway and pros and cons of each, and the evolution of the programme since 2006 when M42 pilot scheme was completed. She will also summarise the various metrics used to define the current safety evidence, the most recent government position and that of the Office of Rail and Road as the regulator for National Highways.
This is an in-person event held at the Vine Conference Centre, 131 Garvock Hill, Dunfermline, KY11 4JU. Spaces are limited.
