How CPD Supports Career Development

Are you looking for some guidance on how to get the most out of your CPD? Do you want to learn how CPD supports your career development? Would you like to learn about some great sources of CPD and how to use CIHT's digital learning platform, CIHT Learn? 

If the answer to any of that is yes, then please join CIHT's Professional Development Officer, John Hall, along with a member of the CIHT CPD Panel and other special guests, for this CPD focused webinar.

Synopsis

You will receive information, guidance and best practice advice from a CPD Panel member, a former CIHT Regional Chair and a former Transport Planning apprentice who passed her apprenticeship with a distinction. You will get the support you need to help you plan, undertake, record and reflect on your CPD activities and you will learn how you can do all that (and much more) on our digital learning platform, CIHT Learn.

Members are encouraged to have CIHT Learn open during the session so you can learn live. The webinar is free for all CIHT Members. 

 

Who should attend?

Anyone at any stage in their career who is working in Highways and Transportation who wants to learn more about the benefits of CPD and how it supports your career development. This includes anyone who would like to learn about CIHT's digital learning platform, CIHT Learn.

You will receive information, guidance and best practice advice from a variety of CPD experts at different stages in their career and understand how CPD supported their career development. You will learn where you can find some great resources / sources of CPD, including the great CPD  courses and activities available on our digital learning platform, CIHT Learn.

You will learn how to use CIHT Learn to its full capacity, including how to create a Development Action Plan and SWOT. And, you will get the support you need to help you plan, undertake, record and reflect on your CPD activities. Members are encouraged to have CIHT Learn open during the session so you can learn live. You will also learn how volunteering activities such as being CIHT STEM ambassador or mentor are considered CPD, and how those activities support your career development.

Speakers

John Hall, Professional Development Officer, CIHT

John has held positions in the Education and Professional Development departments at two Professional Engineering Institutions. He has supported CPD programs for both and is the secretariat for the CIHT CPD Panel.

John comes to this webinar with many years experience supporting members to plan, act, record and reflect on their CPD records and to support them to complete Development Action Plans and SWOT analysis.

John also helps support the CIHT online learning and development platform, CIHT Learn.

 

 

Elizabeth (Lizzie) Jones, CIHT Associate Member and Distinction level Transport Planning apprentice

Lizzie started her journey as a Transport Planning apprentice in 2021 with Mott MacDonald while studying part time at Leeds College of building. Lizzies hard work was recognised when she was awarded a distinction for her End Point Assessment with CIHT. Prior to working at Motts, she studied Graphic Communication at Birmingham City University, graduating in 2019 with a first class degree.

During her studies, she was able to expand her knowledge through educational trips to Europe where she saw the success of sustainable transport practices. As the Early Career Professional Champion for Mott MacDonald's Liverpool office, Lizzie actively engages with local schools as a CIHT STEM ambassador, where she is able to share her personal experiences and professional journey through career fairs and workshop events.

Lizzie now works in the Cities Studio team amongst a team of Urban Planners, Designers, and Economists and can contribute some of her success to CPD.

 

 

Michael Broadbent, CIHT CPD Panel Member

Michael is a retired engineer who's cv is so extensive that it can't all be put in a short bio. He has designed bridges and supervised construction on parts of the UKs Motorways, Canals, Railways and has designed parts of the UK road infrastructure. 

He has conducted field feasibility and legal studies for a 7,000 km Trans-African Highway and was a water engineer in Botswana. He has been the lead engineer on projects in Jamaica and the Sudan to improve their national road infrastructure and was a flood damage engineer in Bangladesh; and Chief Infrastructure Engineer in the Lesotho Highlands of South Africa.

He has had experience as a Chief Structural Engineer building roads in Bangladesh, Thailand; Kenya and many more! He is also a Senior Lecturer on Infrastructure Engineering and Undergraduate and Postgraduate University Courses on Disaster Management. He is an Engineering Council Liaison Officer, CIHT mentor, professional reviewer, CPD panel member and auditor. His views on how CPD can progress your career are not to be missed!

 

Malcolm Matheson, Senior Transport Planner, MCIHT

Malcolm is a Senior Transport Planner working for Mott MacDonald and has previously worked for Atkins. He has over ten years’ experience in Transport Planning, working on a wide range of projects from Transport Assessments to STAG based appraisals for clients including Network Rail, Transport Scotland, CalMac and Heathrow Ltd.

Malcolm also works on Environmental Impact Assessments as well as development planning where he has supported Roads/Highways departments of local authorities. 

Malcolm has been a Committee member of CIHT Scotland for over four years and in that time has chaired the CIHT Scotland Committee’s (formally) Young Professionals Network.
