CIHT North East & Cumbria are delighted to offer this webinar on the restoration of the Union Chain Bridge with Simon Rudman, Design Manager for Environment and Transport for Northumberland County Council.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, this webinar has been postponed. A new date will be announced soon.
This webinar will give an overview of a 4 year project to restore the Union Chain Bridge back to its former glory. The £10 million scheme was completed using funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, delivered in partnership with Northumberland County Council, Scottish Borders Council, Museums Northumberland and the Friends of the Union Chain Bridge.
Restoration of the 203-year-old structure, (the oldest vehicle suspension bridge in the world) was completed in April after every single piece was removed, checked and restored or replaced before being carefully reassembled. The bridge forms an important part of the national cycle network and is also a tourist attraction in its own right. In July it was recognised as an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, putting it on a par with the Eiffel Tower, the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Brooklyn Bridge.
The webinar will be delivered by Simon Rudman, Design Manager for Environment and Transport at NCC. He played an integral role in the successful delivery of this project and will cover the challenges and successes that were experienced in that 4 year period.
This is suitable for anyone involved in Highways, Transportation and Engineering.
