Hi everyone – as things wind down for the winter break, I wanted to reflect on a few headlines from my first few months as Regional Chair, and look forward to what we have planned in 2025.

The theme for this year was Yorkshire’s Transport Future(s)- a theme that got off to a flying start when we reinvigorated our Annual Conference for the first time since the pandemic, focusing on how we can progress Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in the sector. We also hosted a CIHT Council meeting, a seminar on the ongoing works at Armley Gyratory and invited Transport for the North to help progress their Strategic Transport Plan with us.
Those of you who attended the AGM this year may recall that Yorkshire’s Transport Futures not only relates to its infrastructure, but also the people coming into the sector and the fresh perspectives they bring. I was delighted to host CIHT President Glenn Lyons at Leeds College of Building to introduce apprentices and Emerging Career Professionals to scenario planning and future visioning, as well as Past President Karen McShane as part of this year’s Leeds Pride march with Building Equality. Coupled with increased engagement with the University of Leeds and an active programme of events from our Emerging Professionals Committee, we are positioning ourselves as an active and inclusive institution that supports our members’ professional development and grows their network.
I’m pleased to say our membership has grown this year, a trend I hope we can continue into the new year so that more people can see the benefits CIHT has to offer. We’ve already got two events pencilled into our calendar in the new year; a Pub Quiz on February 5th and a seminar on Data-Driven Decarbonisation on February 13th. I’m also hoping to engage more with our STEM Network, host some events across the wider region and expand our committee in the new year – if you’re interested in helping us out, let us know!
I’d like to thank the Regional Committee and Emerging Professionals Committee for all their support in delivering 2024’s programme, as well as to you in our membership for engaging with it.
Merry Christmas to you all – and see you in the new year!
