Recognised as an approved standard by IfATE back in 2016 as a result of the work of a trailblazer group supported by CIHT, the transport planning technician apprenticeship integrates academic learning with practical work experience, ensuring that apprentices are well-versed in theoretical knowledge and possess valuable industry experience.

CIHT's Head of Education and Professional Development said:

I’m thrilled that we’ve successfully delivered end-point assessments for over 150 Transport Planning Technician apprentices supporting them to achieve professional recognition. This milestone reflects our commitment to developing skilled professionals who will shape the future of transport planning.

Sarah Carter, Project Manager - Transport Planning and University Centre Designated Safeguarding Officer at Leeds College of Building said:

I am thrilled that Leeds College of Building have had 150 learners passing their End Point Assessment with CIHT. CIHT have been hugely supportive of these new and progressing Transport Planners. Not only are apprentices gaining their apprenticeship completion certificate after passing their course at the college, but they also achieve EngTech status with the opportunity to register with the Engineering Council and join CIHT as Members. Leeds College of Building Transport Planners go on to work in industry with many taking up managerial roles and the college looks forward to further success alongside CIHT going forward.

Each year, CIHT runs EPAs for apprentice transport planning technicians working in highways and transportation to give them the opportunity to become professionally recognised as Engineering Technicians (EngTech). Over 50% of the successful Transport Planning Technician apprentices, became paying members with CIHT and have registered for EngTech through CIHT.

This technician apprenticeship is also a gateway apprenticeship to the level six transport planning degree apprenticeship, delivered by Aston University. Many of the level three transport planning apprentices have gone on to the degree apprenticeship. Others have progressed within the sector, and some are now even apprentice managers themselves.

Apprentice manager and former transport planning apprentice at TfL, and CIHT Member, Tommy Smith said:

Since completing my End Point Assessment, I have continued to use the skills I learnt as an apprentice, such as stakeholder management and how certain changes can affect the road network in London. This has helped me to progress in my career. I also appreciate the continued support I have been given from the CIHT, and the support they continue to provide for apprentices who are working on the Transport Planning apprenticeships.

CIHT recommends apprenticeships as a great way of learning new skills, networking, gaining valuable work experience and getting qualified all while earning a salary. They are a fantastic way to kick-start a career in Highways and Transportation as you will work on projects that transform lives, gain invaluable experience from knowledgeable colleagues and tutors, and you can earn as you learn through Leeds College of Building.

Award winning, former transport planning technician apprentice, and CIHT Member, Leora Wilson said:

I would like to thank the team at CIHT for adapting to my needs and ensuring I had a positive and smooth EPA experience, which has enabled my career to hugely take off. My advice to someone thinking about becoming an apprentice would be to make the most of every opportunity to learn new skills and get involved in CIHT awards, initiatives and events!
