With more than 30 participants from CIHT Hong Kong and Hong Kong Metropolitan University, Dr. -Ing. Barry Li presented key considerations for planning and design of sea crossing bridges, including choices of location of sea crossing bridges, how the location affecting the design parameter and span length of bridge, AASHTO design code as well as two different methods of design namely design for collision impact approach and probability-based analysis approach. The participants enjoyed interaction with Barry and asked a lot of questions in the end of the technical seminar.
To conclude, our Chair of CIHT Hong Kong stressed the importance of cost-effective design using the available statistical vessel data and waterway geometry, and the mindset of accepting probability-based analysis approach to balance the risk of vessel collision and cost of protection.
This technical visit to Central Kowloon Route Kai Tak East Contract (CKR-KTE) jointly co-organised by CIHT Hong Kong and Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) (Civil Division) was held on 24 August 2024 morning attracting 30 members from both institutions to join. Ms. Label Lee of Arup-Mott MacDonald Joint Venture (AMMJV), gave all participants a brief introduction of CKR project in their Community Liaison Centre. She added that the CKR project was aimed to achieve the sustainable development, benefit economy, minimise impacts to the surroundings during construction, reprovide facilities to the public and reach green building standards.
After that, all participants enjoyed a video showing the project construction challenges including minimising interruption of existing traffic at Gascogine Road Flyover which passed through Yau Ma Tei Carpark Building during demolition of this carpark building, widening of Gascogine Road Flyover at a very limited space as well as the temporary traffic arrangement at the concerned area. The host and all participants then moved to a newly built footbridge at Kai Fuk Road. Messrs. Issac SIU and POON Chi Ho of AMMJV explained more how the flyovers built above Kai Tak River and how temporary steel platforms constructed to support flyover construction.
All participants appreciated this opportunity to visit the CKR project before it is open to the public and got more understanding on difficulties and considerations for construction of this project.
Our Terence Mak representing us together with HKIE (Civil Division)’s representative presented souvenirs to the host during the visit.
