Yesterday (4 December 2024) the Scottish Budget was presented to the Scottish Parliament, setting out the Scottish Government’s proposed spending and tax plans for 2025 to 2026.
The Scottish Budget 2025-26 includes information on future transport spending, as the Scottish Parliament has significant devolved transport powers.
The Scottish Budget 2025-26 describes transport ‘s intended contributions to the National Outcomes as primarily:
CIHT welcomes the £2.6bn investment in public transport to provide new ferries, enhance ports and harbours, and commence plans to replace ScotRail’s Intercity fleets, as well as maintain existing bus, lifeline ferry and rail services.
The renewed commitment to extend free bus travel to asylum seekers and provide inter-island free ferry travel to children and young people under 22 is also welcomed.
CIHT is pleased to see the allocation of funds to provide maintenance to the highways network and existing assets, including a focus on decarbonisation, resilience of the transport networks, and adapting the road network to the impacts of climate change.
Further information surrounding how allocated funding for decarbonisation, active travel, and road safety will be spent is desirable. CIHT looks forward to supplementary information becoming available from the Scottish Parliament.
