Reaching over 51,000 students across the UK in 2023, Tomorrow’s Engineers Week is a great opportunity for CIHTs STEM ambassadors to power up students’ passions to explore dynamic engineering career paths within highways and transportation. Students benefit greatly by seeing how their own personal interests and talents can align with diverse and rewarding careers within highways and transportation and engineering.

We asked past CIHT President and STEM ambassador, Deborah Sims, how she helps students align their interests and passions with highways and transportation careers. Deborah said:

As a CIHT STEM ambassador, I have the privilege of demonstrating to young people how engineering touches and impacts every part of their lives; from boiling a kettle to using their phones before coming to school. By simply asking them for examples of how they travel to school, I can connect their experiences to the work of the engineers who influence, design, build and improve our landscape. It’s a joy to inspire a student’s passion to want to shape a future with safer roads, vibrant public spaces, and a zero-carbon transport system, while exploring why a diverse and inclusive engineering workforce matters. I hope they realise that engineering makes a real difference to communities and the world, and that it's open to everyone!

Deborah Sims, FCIHT

Over the past 12 months, CIHTs STEM ambassadors like Deborah, have encouraged the next generation to power up their passion by supporting award winning programs such as The Festhub and Powering Futures. They have delivered over 11,000 hours of STEM activities to over 70,000 students across the UK and have added over £3 million of social value.
