Government Health Roundtable with Transport Ministers
On Tuesday 11th February, CIHT Chief Executive, Sue Percy CBE attended a transport roundtable as part of the government’s health mission.
The roundtable was hosted by Local Transport Minister - Simon Lightwood MP, with National Active Travel Commissioner - Chris Boardman CBE (Chair) and Minister for the Future of Roads - Lilian Greenwood MP and Professor Chris Whitty in attendance.
Attendees discussed what the government should do to create a transport system that supports public health and addresses health inequalities.
Sue highlighted the importance of funding, accessibility and resilience to ensure that everyone can benefit from safe and well-maintained networks that promote good health.
CIHT’s Creating a Public Realm for all report was featured in the ITS UK Active Travel / Inclusive Mobility Forum Meeting on the 12 Feb in Milton Keynes.
The session explored to what degree ITS solutions can help to address accessibility barriers, with a particular focus on walking.
The meeting was hosted by ITS UK Members Clearview Intelligence, Adele Wearing of Milton Keynes Council and Kris Beuret of Social Research Associates and ITS UK’s Inclusive Mobility Forum Chair, presented the problem of missing data for pedestrian bus trips and how this can create opportunities for ITS.
Justin Ward, Head of Policy & Technical Practice at CIHT, gave a presentation on “Creating a Public Realm for All”. The CIHT report examines the challenges involved in achieving accessible transport infrastructure in the public realm.
Additional presentations include ‘the application of innovative AI-driven indoor navigation’ by Neil Barnfather - GoodMaps. This technology is enabling everyone the freedom and autonomy to discover and interact with the world around them.
Finally, Peter Cattell - Clearview Intelligence, explored how we can protect vulnerable road users on the network.
On Tuesday (11 February 2025) key industry stakeholders joined a roundtable discussion jointly held by CIHT and Road Safety Foundation (RAC).
The discussion was chaired by CIHT President Glenn Lyons and attended by Stephen Hammerton - Chair of Road Safety Foundation, and Sue Percy CBE - CIHT Chief Executive.
The roundtable focussed on the recent CIHT report Progressing the UK towards Safe System implementation, with Chair of the report Dr Suzy Charman - Executive Director, Road Safety Foundation, joining discussions.
Delegates discussed some of the key actions highlighted in that report aimed at improving safety outcomes through safer road infrastructure and speed management.
CIHT looks forward to continuing and maintaining relationships with all key stakeholders and government Ministers in order to aid the delivery and implementation of a transport network that is fit for all our futures.
