An essential pathway into our industry, apprenticeships give individuals the chance gain academic qualifications while gaining experience in the workplace and give organisations the chance to train the people they require. In Wales, apprenticeships leading to a degree have not yet been offered in the construction industry but if approved the first apprentices will be starting their courses in September 2024.
We have been working with the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), Welsh Government, HEFCW and other professional bodies to develop degree level apprenticeships in Construction Management, Civil Engineering and Surveying. The knowledge, skills and behaviours essential to these roles have been identified and degree courses have now been validated at the University of South Wales, University of Wales Trinity St Davids and Wrexham University. The final version of Wales Construction Degree Apprenticeship Framework has now been published for consultation and CIHT Members who work and employ civil engineers and construction managers in Wales are encouraged to respond to the consultation.
The consultation is open until 13 June and can be accessed via the CITB website.
Members based in Wales who are interested in securing a place for an apprentice for September 2024 are encouraged to either contact the universities directly or contact education@ciht.org.uk
