CIHT and the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS) held an in- person roundtable focusing on the theme – “Speed management: a policy for greater consistency”- on 1 November 2023. Issues discussed included:

  • The need for speed management measures to be deployed within a safe system approach to road safety.
  • The need for a National Speed Management Strategy- a call for greater consistency between local highway authorities on the deployment of speed management measures.
  • The need for speed to be considered as a lead indicator of the safety of a road.
  • Provide evidence on speed limits setting (especially 30mph or below).
  • What a national speed management strategy should include and look like (e.g education, training and publicity, highways engineering and design, vehicles engineering, enforcement measures).

The discussions from this roundtable will be used to help shape CIHT’s policy briefing on speed management.
