Martin Tugwell, President of CIHT made this announcement at the first ever CIHT digital awards event on 23 June 2020.
The CIHT Transportation Professional of the Year celebrates individuals who have made an excellent contribution to the Highways and Transportation sector. There were many outstanding entries for this year’s award with inspiration and innovation being highlighted at all levels, showing that CIHT values are strongly intertwined in the great work taking place to better improve and change our sector.

“Mark has been a visible presence in local highways for some time and has always demonstrated the values of CIHT. The judges highlighted his work in several key areas this year – assisting in the development of CIHT’s Local Highways Review, helping in the development of the Highways Sector Council and working closely with Government to develop an approach to the Covid-19 situation for the sector.”
Mark Stevens is the Assistant Director Operational Highways for Suffolk Highways. Mark has been a visible presence in the Local Highways world for some time and has always demonstrated the values that CIHT has, Professional, Inclusive, Collaborative and Progressive.
Mark Stevens’ highways and transportation career spans more than 37 years. Joining CIHT in 1984, Mark has continually strived for excellence in every role he has had, going above and beyond to establish or seek out excellent practice, for local, regional and national benefit.
Mark demonstrates his professionalism by managing his national responsibilities alongside local ones, ensuring both areas of his career complement each other. In December 2018, Suffolk County Council’s (SCC) Scrutiny Committee congratulated
Mark for working to positively raise SCC’s profile in the sector.
Acknowledged by his peers as a ‘thought leader’, Mark is regularly asked to speak at conferences, seminars and symposiums to share his knowledge and passion for the sector. He was the first witness for the Transport Select Committee’s Inquiry into Local Roads Funding and Governance in November 2019.
