In the latest episode of CIHT's podcast "Transport Talks" we had an opportunity to speak with the AtkinsRéalis team: John-Paul Doherty, Dr. Matt Peck, and Aston Brand on the topic of road safety.
In this podcast we have touched upon the Safe System approach, explored the global Vision Zero movement, and discussed the power of behaviour change, emphasizing the critical role of road safety education and awareness in making our roads safe for everyone.
John-Paul Doherty, Associate Technical Director
John-Paul (JP) is a Chartered Civil Engineer and Operational Safety Specialist in highways. He has over 20 years of experience across a number of high-profile projects in highway operations, road safety engineering, safety risk management, policy, design standards research and development. As a member of the PAIRC Technical Committee for Road Safety and the technical lead for the current UK Road Safety Audit standard GG119, JP is the AtkinsRéalis UK Technical Authority for Operational Safety of Highways, providing technical leadership to the 40+ members of the associated technical group.
Dr. Matt Peck, Director of Innovation
Matt specialises in the development of innovative solutions to challenging transportation problems. A technologist at heart, he provides strategic advice on how to design, build and operate future transportation systems. His role includes research, solution development and technical advisory services, covering topics such as integrated transport, congestion reduction, air quality improvement, traveller modal shift and persistent behavioural change.
Aston Brand, Senior Human Factors Consultant
Aston is a Senior Human Factors Consultant within the Intelligent Mobility and Smart Technologies (IMST) practice at Atkins, with over 6 years’ experience of delivering innovative human factors and behavioural change projects. Aston has supported several national and local authorities to better understand transport users, develop evidence-based initiatives that balance human goals and client outcomes, and evaluate these initiatives to inform future-decision making. In all of her projects, she ensures that a human-centred and systems-thinking approach is taken to maximise the positive impacts of transport investments and mitigate any potential negative unintended consequences. Aston has a MSc in Ergonomics and Human Factors (Behaviour Change) and is Vice Chair of the ITS UK User Behaviour Forum. A member of the Market Research Society (MRS) and a graduate member of the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (CIEHF).
The principle of Vision Zero and the Safe System approach is that we should not just accept that people are going to be killed or seriously injured on our roads. We need to start with the principle that we have to design our transportation system to prevent these devastating events from happening.
The key part of the Safe System Approach is people and their behaviours. We need to make sure when designing this system that we do support people and enable them.
We need to properly appreciate that our actions have a safety impact on ourselves and on others, and we do have a responsibility to others. Introducing physical safety measures in the transport system will help, but we need to understand more on why our transportation system allows us to take risks...
