The world is in a state of flux socially, technologically, economically, environmentally and politically. What lies ahead over the next decade in relation to climate change? What does this mean for professionals and organisations in the highways and transportation sector?

Changing Landscapes for Infrastructure and Mobility: Assessing Transport and Environment Scenarios

CIHT CLIMATES is a new initiative that is exploring these scenarios and will provide a series of practical recommendations to enable the sector to make genuine change.

Led by CIHT President Professor Glenn Lyons and sponsored by Mott MacDonald and Ringway, CIHT CLIMATES will:

•    Help transport professionals consider their priorities in the face of future climates change, the actions needed and the skills to deliver them; and
•    Give CIHT members a greater voice to inform how the Institution champions its climate action theme

Professor Glenn Lyons, President, CIHT said:

“Climate Action is one of the core themes of CIHT and we want to provide a hands-on opportunity for our members and the wider sector to engage.”

“CIHT CLIMATES promises to be an exciting initiative, providing a means for people to play their part in shaping the future of our sector. CIHT CLIMATES will give transportation professionals the chance to consider what climate change in the future means for our actions in the present.”

CIHT CLIMATES is a great way to learn from fellow professionals.  The initiative will include a series of one-day face-to-face workshops held around the UK, online engagement sessions and a survey of highways and transportation professionals.

Speaking at the first workshop held at CIHT’s offices in London (18 September 2024), Glenn said:

“This is an opportunity for transport professionals to learn from each other and about important initiatives we can take forward as we embark on this challenge. The challenge of climate action is real and CIHT will be using this initiative to lead the change we need in our sector.”

“Today’s first workshop has given our attendees the chance to be a changemaker in a difficult and uncertain world. At the end of the session today we saw over 40 highways and transportation professionals pledge to make a difference in their professional and personal lives to help support us on our CLIMATES journey.”

Attending one of the workshops will provide an excellent day of training in futures and foresight methods and help inform climate action.
