The Department for Transport released a range of statistics on transport on the 6th December 2018. One of the areas looked into is the climate impact from transport in Great Britain.

The statistics continue to show that transport has become the largest contributor of GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions in the UK, overtaking energy production as the biggest emitter. Transport remains more or less level at 27% of total GHG emissions compared with energy’s 26%, largely due to a switch away from coal based production.

Of the different transport modes, passenger cars are the largest contributors with over twice as many emissions as international aviation, the second largest contributor.

To address issues with air quality and climate change will require the transport sector, public and private, to take stronger measures to reduce emissions.
