Delivery of 300m of new track through central Manchester to connect the city’s two main railway stations has moved a step closer with the formation of an official construction partnership by Network Rail.
The Ordsall Chord will for the first time provide a direct link between Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Victoria, easing network congestion and improving connectivity with other northern cities.
Network Rail has signed a contract with Amey, Skanska, Bam Nuttall and Siemens to deliver the project.
“Within this alliance of organisations we have a wide range of skills and experience to make this vital new stretch of railway a reality and deliver the service all rail passengers deserve,” said Network Rail’s alliance manager Mike Heywood.
“This is an exciting time for passengers, businesses and the rail industry in the north of England. A better railway supports jobs, housing and economic growth and the new Ordsall Chord has a massive role to play in opening up new and faster journeys.”
Easter saw a 10 day closure of Manchester Victoria and Salford Central stations during which work was carried out to move track, widen the Middlewood viaduct, install a new bridge and strengthen railway arches in preparation for the Chord.
The project is expected to complete by the end of next year.
Amey account director James McDermott said: “This alliance brings together the best experience and expertise in the industry and we’re looking forward to working in partnership to deliver significant improvements to connectivity in the north.”
Siemens delivery director Doug Lee added: “We are now looking forward to working closely with colleagues throughout the supply chain to deliver this major programme, which will involve more than 300 signalling equivalent units.”
