The educational tool ‘Bringing Transport Infrastructure to Life’ was released during Tomorrow’s Engineers Week which ran from 4 to 8 November.
It is designed to link in with the current primary schools curriculum and allows children to have fun while practicing science, technology, engineering, maths and geography.
The pack gives students from a young age the opportunity to apply theoretical skills to practical and real world challenges by imagining and demonstrating solutions to transport problems.
“We have produced this pack to bring engineering to life for children and give them the opportunity to start learning about the possibilities of a rewarding career in highways and transportation,” said CIHT’s President Martin Tugwell.
The idea behind the pack – which can be adapted to suit different age groups – is that an appropriate teacher or STEM ambassador leading the session will present the class with a challenge.
Students will create a model that showcases ways they could improve the local area or support the community by introducing new ways to manage the challenge.
The pack also offers children a chance to practice and develop their written and verbal communication skills, while learning about how travel and infrastructure will evolve in the future and their own responsibilities in the community and towards the environment.
Development of the new material was sponsored by a grant from the Rees Jeffreys Road Fund. To find out more including how you could get involved in using the pack, contact education@ciht.org.uk
