Routes to CEng and IEng for applicants without accredited academic qualifications

The Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT) offers the Individual Route as an alternative pathway for professionals seeking Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status. This route is ideal for individuals who have not followed a traditional academic route but possess the necessary technical knowledge and experience or for those who have academic qualifications that are not accredited.

The Individual Route is designed for engineers  who can demonstrate equivalent technical knowledge and understanding of engineering principles to those with accredited qualifications.

Applicants can choose from the following pathways, depending on their background and academic qualifications:

  • Technical Report
  • Further Learning Report
  • Experiential Route (CEng only)

Each pathway is aligned with Engineering Council UK's AHEP learning outcomes to ensure that applicants demonstrate the same level of underpinning knowledge as graduates from accredited programmes.

Pathways Explained

Technical Report  (CEng and IEng)

The Technical Report option allows candidates to showcase their knowledge, gained through industry experience, through a structured, three-stage process:

Stage 1: Synopsis

You submit a 1,500-word synopsis outlining how you plan to meet the AHEP learning outcomes. The synopsis is reviewed by CIHT assessors, and if successful, you proceed to the full Technical Report.

Stage 1 applications can be submitted at any time.

Stage 2/3: Full Technical Report

You then prepare a detailed report (up to 8,000 words), based on your synopsis, which demonstrates your understanding and application of engineering principles.

There are two stage 2/3 rounds each year see dates and fees

Following submission of your full technical report, a one-hour interview with CIHT assessors is arranged to discuss your technical report and how you have demonstrated the required level of underpinning knowledge.

If successful, you may proceed to apply for Professional Review.

Further Learning Report (FLR) (CEng and IEng)

The FLR is for candidates who hold academic qualifications which are not accredited or partially accredited. This pathway involves:

  • Completing a detailed FLR Table aligned with AHEP learning outcomes.
  • Submitting details of your qualifications, a CV, CPD records, and supporting evidence.

Typically, no interview is required unless deemed necessary by the assessors. Applications can be submitted at any time.

CIHT Experiential Route (CEng only)

This route is suitable for those with significant experience and partially accredited academic qualifications or those holding IEng status. It requires:

  • Extensive technical and managerial experience in transportation engineering.
  • Submission of a detailed application form and supporting evidence.

An interview may be required to further explore your experience and knowledge. There are two experiential route deadlines each year. Please see our dates and fees page for further information
