The Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT) Society of Road Safety Auditors (SoRSA) held its fourth annual conference on Monday 13 and Tuesday 14 June in Birmingham.
Monday’s events began in the afternoon with two workshops (Interim & Stage 4 Audits and Risk Assessment), which were repeated so that each of the delegate was able to attend both workshops. These were followed by the Society’s Annual General Meeting, during which there were elections for several vacant positions on the SoRSA Committee, it was encouraging that so many members wish to become part of the Society resulting in the need for elections.
The AGM marked the completion of Ian Medd’s two year term of office as Chairman and he is succeeded by Julian Bartlett. Following the AGM, the delegates were treated to presentations by two young SoRSA members competing for the SoRSA Branch Young Engineer’s Award. Stewart Knowles from Jacobs gave his presentation on passive safety, followed by Shane Martin, also from Jacobs, with his presentation on auditing of the 2012 Olympic Routes. The judging panel, made up of Julian Bartlett, Libby Sands and Richard Jones then moved off into a huddle to make their decision. After all of this hard work the delegates gathered for their evening dinner, before retiring to the bar, where else!
The remainder of the conference took place on Tuesday and was attended by 126 delegates from both the public and private sectors. The welcome address was given by CIHT President Geoff Allister, who announced the winner of the SoRSA Young Engineer competition; Stewart Knowles, who became the first recipient of the Peter Bane Memorial trophy, kindly, donated by Libby Sands, the Inaugural Chairman of SoRSA. Stewart now goes on to represent SoRSA at the Colas national finals.
Following on from the award ceremony were some excellent presentations covering such topics as ‘Managed Motorways’, ‘The EU Directive on Road Safety Audit’ and ‘Quality Audits’. The afternoon session was of an equally high standard with talks on ‘Road User Behaviour’, ‘Road Restraint Systems’ and the processes involved in assessing and auditing a major highway project in Kenya. It was a lively day with many diverse questions and discussions generated by the presentation topics
The conference has been regarded as a huge success. The large turnout was particularly encouraging in the light of the current economic climate and spending cuts across the industry.

The first Annual SoRSA Conference got off to a wonderful start when at 7.00pm on Tuesday 17 June 2008 over 50 delegates attended the first Annual General Meeting of the Society, which was held in the Copthorne Hotel, Birmingham.
The AGM was led by Chairman Libby Sands, with delegates hearing of the achievements made in the first term of the society and of plans for future work. This was followed by an informal dinner where over 80 delegates ate and drank well, safe in the knowledge that they would not be driving home that evening.
