This year's CIHT East Midlands Conference will be centered on Climate Action, both in terms of mitigation and adaptation. With topics ranging from low carbon aggregates, to climate change adaptation for local roads, and modal shift; and speakers from Nottinghamshire County Council, AtkinsRealis, Arcadis, Arup and Imperial College London, this conference is gearing up to be an unmissable event!

Net Zero RegenerationWayne Bexton - Director of Green Growth, Investment and Assets, Nottinghamshire County CouncilWayne Bexton is the Director of Green Growth, Investment and Assets at Nottinghamshire County Council. He has worked in public sector Place leadership roles for over 20 years, specialising in delivering sustainable economic growth that aligns with environmental best practice. Wayne has previously delivered sustainability advice in the private sector. Currently leading on Nottinghamshire’s ambitious Place agenda, with an array of significant opportunities ahead of the County including STEP Fusion, Freeport and Investment Zone.

Manufactured aggregates for pavement applicationsDr Ignacio Artamendi - Head of R&D & Technical Services, Holcim UKIgnacio Artamendi leads Holcim UK’s research activities in pavement materials including asphalt and aggregates. His current research activities are focussed on the development and evaluation of sustainable low carbon materials for road construction. He also manage the laboratory’s testing activities in support of the business and is responsible for the laboratory’s UKAS accreditation. He is a Chartered Engineer (CEng), holds a PhD on asphalt mixtures, has published over 50 technical papers in international journals and presented at major international conferences on pavement engineering. |

Climate Resilient Permeable InfrastructureDr Alalea Kia - Resilient Sustainable Infrastructure Group Lead, Imperial College LondonAlalea Kia's research interests are focussed on cleantech, mitigation of the damaging effects of climate change and the transformation of the construction sector towards net-zero. My work encompasses urban flood mitigation and adaptation, sustainable drainage systems, permeable concrete pavements and their application in extreme weather and loading scenarios, additive manufacturing, multi-scale experimental and numerical modelling methods, durability of cement-based materials and the development of new low-carbon cementitious materials. She was chosen as one of the ‘Top 50 Women in Engineering’ in 2022 by the Women’s Engineering Society, received the ‘Hawley Award for Engineering Innovation’ by the Worshipful Company of Engineers and Engineering Council, and the Imperial College London President’s Medal for Excellence in Research in 2023. In 2024, She was also selected as a RAEng Young Engineer of the Year and received the Sir George MacFarlane Medal. |

Measuring and managing asphalt carbon footprintDr Tony Parry - Associate Director, AtkinsRealisTony Parry has worked in the field of road pavement materials and carbon footprint methodology for over 30 years. He is an Associate Director in the Pavements team at AtkinsRéalis, which he joined nearly three years ago, following 17 years as an Associate Professor at the University of Nottingham. He is currently working on highway decarbonisation and climate resilience plans for national and local highway authorities and the road construction industry. |

CIHT CLIMATES at-speed-workshopProf Glenn Lyons - CIHT President & Mott MacDonald Professor of Future Mobility at UWEGlenn Lyons is the Mott MacDonald Professor of Future Mobility at UWE Bristol. The appointment bridges between academia and practice and Glenn is dividing his time between the university and Mott MacDonald (on secondment). At a time of significance for the transport sector, the position aims to co-develop and extend transport expertise in relation to understanding and responding to a changing and uncertain mobility landscape, which is shaped by technological possibilities and societal needs and preferences. Glenn was also formerly the Professor of Transport and Society at UWE Bristol and was the Founder of the Centre for Transport & Society. Glenn’s achievement are too many to list here but it is safe to say that he has led the way in transport planning. |

Modal Shift: From targets to implementationClare Sheffield - Director of Transport Planning, ArupClare is a director in the transport planning team at Arup. Working with clients globally, she specialises in ‘bridging the gap’ between policy-makers and technical specialists, solving problems together to deliver informative and influential analysis, and policy that is robust, effective and deliverable. Prior to joining Arup, Clare was analytical lead for the development of strategy and policy at TfL, including development of the Mayor’s transport strategy and measures to manage travel demand and traffic reduction policies such as congestion charging and road/emissions-based pricing. |

Debunking myths about emissionsDr Sam Bailey - Director of Future Transport & CEO, SkyradSamuel Bailey is the Director of Future Transport and the CEO of Engineering Consultants Skyrad. He worked as a vehicle emissions specialist for several automotive manufacturers before starting Skyrad. Skyrad provides inventive solutions to problems, including that of urban transport. He is also the creator of the Yo-go buggy sharing scheme. |

Come along and support your local committee, learn about what’s happening in your area, plans for the future, and meet fellow CIHT members.
The AGM will see Dr Jwan Kamla, CIHT East Midlands Chair reflect on the past year and the successes of the region. The AGM will see the election of new committee members and will also see the appointment of the Chair and Officers to take forward the region’s plans for the next year.

We welcome applications to become a committee member from across all membership grades and from all backgrounds within the transportation sector. Members from all parts of the East Midlands are encouraged to put themselves forward for nomination as we look to cover as-wide-an-area as possible.
Becoming a CIHT Regional Committee member can help you expand your network with leading professionals in your area and help you stand out from the crowd. You can also find more information about the regional committee roles in the Regional Officers Area.
Joining your committee also counts towards Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and can lead to longer involvement in national CIHT activities.
Nominations to join the committee can be made using the regional committee nomination form.
Formal nominations must be made before Thursday 15th May 2025. Applications should be supported by four regional members and completed with a declaration by you the candidate to show you are willing to stand.
