The research identified significant problems with current bus stop bypass designs and Guide Dogs has developed 15 recommendations.
CIHT welcomes ongoing research into the safety of bus stop bypasses, particularly in relation to older, disabled and vulnerable people, for many of whom bus travel serves as the only accessible mode of transport available.
In our recent report, Creating a Public Realm for All, we warned that ‘cyclists do not always give way to those wishing to cross, and visually impaired people may have difficulty knowing when there is a safe time to cross, as cycles do not make significant noise on approach’.
The CIHT report further highlighted the need for bus stop islands to be wide enough to accommodate all waiting passengers and allow wheelchair users to navigate their way through a crowd to board the bus.
All CIHT members can register their interest in a specific Creating a public realm for all e-learning course based on this research here
